The Canems ECU has been designed to replace distributor based ignition systems, ensuring that the maximum possible voltage is applied to the spark plug. Wasted spark ignition coils are able to charge very quickly, and this ensures that a strong spark is available, irrespective of engine speed.

Precision
A fully programmable ignition advance curve can be tailored to suit your own vehicle regardless of modifications. Data logging, programmable rev-limiters and shift light outputs add to the versatility of the Canems system.

Performance
Despite such features, prices are kept low by sharing service items with major vehicle manufacturers. You can expect an increase in all aspects of performance, from maximum power to miles per gallon.

The System
The Canems ECU has been designed to replace distributor based ignition systems, hence the term distributorless ignition. By doing away with the king lead, rotor arm and distributor cap, the maximum possible voltage is applied to the spark plug tip where it is required. Wasted spark ignition coils are also able to charge very quickly ensuring that a strong spark is present even at very high RPM figures.

Along with the obvious advantages of providing a much stronger spark, the Canems ECU is fully programmable. This means the ignition advance curve can be tailored to suit your own vehicle regardless of modifications. Traditionally, this would be a labour intensive procedure where the distributor advance curve would need to be mechanically modified. At best, the resultant advance curve would be a compromise due to the limited adjustability available within the distributor.
Unlike many competitors, the Canems ECU utilises extremely common sensors and external components which are cheap and widely available. This does not detract from the performance of the system in any way.
Add to these factors the ability to perform data logging, programmable shift light and two programmable rev-limiters, and it becomes clear that the Canems ECU is not only extremely versatile. It offers performance and economy increases at a very reasonable price.

How does it work?
Known as a 'wasted spark' system, the Canems ECU fires two spark plugs for every 180° of crankshaft rotation. This means cylinders one and four fire together, as do cylinders two and three. Although this may seem to be a waste of ignition energy, in practice the high outputs available through modern coil packs actually creates a superior spark when compared with a distributor based ignition setup.

At high RPM, the difference between a distributor based system and a wasted spark system becomes very obvious. Low resistance wasted spark coils take literally thousandths of a second to charge to their full capacity meaning that the spark they create is just as powerful at very high revs as it is lower down in the rev range
